Campaign to say NO to death penalty
The principle of death penalty originates during the dawn of the human communities characterised by violent relationships and unfortunately, it has remained as a heritage of a primitive civilisation.
Today, however, we know that executing a killer is a way to legitimate the principle of revenge and the culture of violence, therefore it creates a negative spiral within society.
We can understand the fact– without sharing it – that in Countries where the basic human rights are regularly being trampled on, death penalty still exists. Yet, it is difficult to understand how even the United States, the Land of the Future to which the whole world looks at to understand how the future will be, can still believe in a method of criminality control so outdated. In fact, although death penalty was brought again in the Unites States in 1976 and since then 1042 citizens have been executed, no decreases in crime has been recorded, on the contrary: murders are 5 times more frequent in USA than in Italy. Unfortunately, death penalty is not just an American issue and, fact even more iniquitous, the higher number of executions is performed against poor people or against people belonging to ethnic or religious minorities.
Global data are undeniable worrying, but it is necessary to highlight that the most part of the Counties of the world is drawing closer to the abolition of death penalty: only 18 of 60 countries that still maintain it have executed the sentences.
There is a reason for hope. And in a global world, strictly interconnected from an economic and cultural point of view, it is a matter of interest to everybody that hope becomes truth and that any kind of violence may be delegitimized.
That is way the campaign against “State killing” must go on and Fondazione Veronesi makes a plea to all the citizens to support this goal by joining the Science for Peace Movement.
