The Task-forces

The intervention programme of Science for Peace includes the action of four task forces, which have the task to formulate operational plans for the fulfilment of the Movement’s goals:

1. Diffuse a culture of peace and overcome tensions among States

2. Reduce nuclear weapons and military expenditures in favour of major investments in research and development

The teams are composed of experts in different fields, involved in specific research activities and concrete programmes, since November 2009.

  • Task-force 1

    School and Reasearch

    In 2010 the task-force drew up the Science for Peace Charter, a scientific manifesto that has updated and strengthened the purposes of the Seville Statement on Violence issued by UNESCO in 1989.

    The Charter, officially presented during the Second Science for Peace World Conference on November 19th, 2010, has been submitted to the Italian Institutions in order for them to undersign it, thus increasing its visibility.

  • Task-force 2

    Science in the service of peace in crisis areas

    In 2010, the touring medical task force “Together for Peace” was created and activated with the purpose of training doctors in the oncologic field, in regions hit by conflicts or facing serious circumstances.  “Together for Peace” addresses to doctors from particularly needy areas, scheduling scholarships for the training of specialists and the opening of departments for breast cancer diagnosis and stages of medical training in loco and in Italy.

    2011 - Afghanistan

    Fondazione Veronesi supported the participation of 10 Afghani women doctors in an International Convention on Senology that took place in Istanbul last April 14th-16th and that was attended also by Professor Umberto Veronesi.

    The participation in the Convention represents the first step of a programme for breast cancer diagnosis that Fondazione Veronesi intends to carry out in Afghanistan through the opening of a department provided with diagnosis machinery at the Medical Aid for Afghan Women in Herat. The programme includes also training stages addressed to medical Afghani staff.

    2010 - Palestine

    Two doctors of the European Institute of Oncology participated in the Congress of Palestine Oncologists that took place in Jericho on May, 27th and 28th, 2010. Doctor Oreste Gentilini, senologist , and Doctor Lorenza Meneghetti, radiologist, have shown the best breast cancer diagnosis techniques and treatment. • Task-force 3

    European Union: crisis management and conflict prevention

    2011 – The study commissioned to the Istituto Affari Internazionali (International Affairs Institute) in Rome in 2010, with the title: "EU crisis management: institutions and capabilities in the making" has been presented to all European Institutions and to the main research centres.

    Next step of the Task-Force is asking the European Parliament in Brussels to conduct a study on the possibility of creating a common European army in order to rationalise expenses and to reduce military investments in favour of major investments in research and development.

    2010 – The Task-Force asked IAI to carry out a survey analysing instruments and capabilities of the European Union on crisis management and conflict prevention.

    The research has examined recent development and future scenarios of the EU security model that is based on an approach going from crisis prevention to post-conflict reconstruction.

    The study has put forward a set of proposals for a closer coordination between the different elements – politic and diplomatic, military and civilian – of the European Union’s action for the promotion of peace and stability.

  • Task-force 4

    Banks and civil society

    2011 – The Code will be distributed to the main Italian and international bank groups and specific control mechanisms will be activated in order to supervise it. Third Sector organisations will be invited to the table as well.

    2010 – The committee of this Task-Force has worked on the drafting of a responsibility Code on the armament sector financing.

    The table is composed of professionals with competences and experiences in the bank field, in the civil society area, in research, in trade-union realities and in the military sector.

    This Code wants to foster a path towards the responsibilization of all parts involved in the field of armament production and trade.

    Such path aims at:

    •     contributing to assess the operations  related to the field;
    •     helping to evaluate non-financial risks connected with operations in the field;
    •     increasing transparency on services and financing concerning the sector;
    •     fostering the best practice carried out by all parts involved.
